The Double (2013)

Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska are the stars of The Double, a movie by the English director Richard Ayoade and inspired by Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s novel. What can happen if a better version (more charming and more successful) of yourself appears and starts shaking your monotonous life? This is the menace that Simon James (Jesse Eisenberg) has to face when James Simon (Jesse Eisenberg) shows up at his dystopian work place.

Interesting cinematography, amazing editing and marvellous soundtrack are the background for the astonishing performance of Jesse Eisenberg, who proves to be one of the best actors of these days. Presented at 2013 Toronto Film Festival, it’s a movie to watch, at least once in lifetime.

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency

The book Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, written by Douglas Adams, best known for The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, was published in 1987. After thirty years, different radio adaptations and a TV series, the Holistic Detective returns on TV. Broadcast on BBC America, the TV show is distributed worldwide by Netflix.

Dirk Gently is played by Samuel Barnett (Desperate Romantics, Penny Dreadful), while Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings) is his reluctant sidekick Todd Brotzman. Together, they’ll have to face weird enemies and solve a mysterious homicide.

Quick tips: London has fallen

After three years from Olympus has fallen, directed by Antoine Fuqua, Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) and U.S. President Benjamin Asher (Aaron Eckhart) return. This time London is the setting of a terrible terrorists’ attack.

Babak Najafi is the director of the second movie of the franchise, London has fallen (2016), whose plot is almost totally absurd. Not even the chasing-fighting scenes manage to thrill or involve. Really disappointed, as I liked the first movie.

Let’s see if with the third one, Angel has fallen, the franchise will improve. To watch just in a flu-day.

Quick Tips: Devil’s Knot (2013)

Presented at 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, Devil’s Knot, directed by Atom Egoyan, recalls the shocking, violent murders of three kids and the following trail against the so-called “West Memphis Three”. Colin Firth is Ron Lax, the private investigator who, doubting the Three’s guilt, will try to discover the truth; Reese Witherspoon is Pamela Hobbs, mother of one of the victims.

Although some director’s choices (like showing the characters’ dreams) make the plot even more complicated, Devil’s Knot is a good movie, captivating and touching, making the audience questioning about the “in”-credibility of the whole story. Shaming the lack of advertisment for its broadcast on Italia’s channel Rai 4 – I discovered it by chance.

From suspicion to interest: Emerald City

What trails will have to face Dorothy (Adria Arjona) during her journey to Emerald City? We’ll find out from the 6th of January 2017 when her adventure, based on the well-known book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz written by  L. Frank Baum in 1900, will start on NBC.

Knowing that Vincent D’Onofrio (Marvel’s Daredevil, among thousands) is the Wizard of Oz is making everything much more interesting.
